Syncing Up with the iKid...why infuse technology in the classroom?

Edutopia posted an article by Josh McHugh that makes the case for connected teaching.  The article provides a bit of background on the type of kids we have in our classroom (generally, VERY technologically savvy) and ways educators are successfully reaching them.  One item that stood out for me in this article was the fact that the learning power is shifting from the traditional center to the fringes--in other words, the teacher is becoming more of a facilitator versus keeper of knowledge.  It seems as if schools in general are reluctant to release some sort of that power, which explains the restrictions on things such as blogging and using wiki's in the classroom.

The article can be viewed at the following link: http://www.edutopia.org/ikid-digital-learner In it there are great ideas on how to use technology in the classroom, and background research on WHY we need to use technology.

I feel that schools need to become more willing to accept technology and all it has to offer. Today's kids are exposed in all aspects of technology from iPods, cell phones, and the Internet--blogs and mySpace. Kids today are used to getting information at their fingertips. As a high school teacher, I do my best incorporating technology into my lesson. I generally assign homework and projects from online History websites for them to do.

As educators of today's kids, we must be willing to fully embrace technology without too many restrictions. We have to take full advantage of technology and make it work for us, and our students. Technology can become our greatest asset in educating our students, especially since they are already synced up. One example of using this technology with the iKid would be with the usage of podcasts that readily available on websites and can be downloaded onto their iPods. Therefore, the kids' iPods will become an extension of the classroom learning.

Nice article! I found one bit of information damaging to our classrooms. The survey by CDW Corporation showed that teachers more than likely only use technology in the classroom to ease administrative requirements. In addition, most teachers know how to use internet, word processing, and email; however, only 27 percent know how to integrate technology into the classroom. I believe it is important for teachers to have training in technology so they can use technology in the classroom.
